What to Plant in the Garden?

As winter drags on I keep mulling over the garden plans. It's during this slowest and longest month of the year that the garden plans get bigger and bigger.
  • I want to expand the original garden 10 feet south and west
  • I want a usable green house within the reach of a garden hose
  • I want to grow more broccoli, onions, garlic, potataoes, carrots, cabbages
  • herbs are a must sage, oregano, rosemary, dill, thyme, mint
  • basil gets it's own bullet point because basil is the root of pesto which in turn is the root of so many easy tasty meals that feel complicated and special with the addition of pesto, I make batches and batches and freeze them like flat emerald packets of summer in the freezer
  • I want tomatoes, lots and lots of tomatoes

Then come plans for preservation like:
  • I need a root cellar for as much as we want to grow
  • I want to put up a jar of apple sauce for each week of the year
  • fruit leather!
  • more frozen veggies ready for roasting
  • a new freezer
  • I want tomatoes put up so I can use them all winter, that's a lot of tomatoes!

I guess mostly I want to smell soil, fresh grass and rain. Only 3 more months until the leaves are out. And soon the plant table will be making it's southern exposure debut, starting small, getting totally out of control and then finally going away in May. But me? I'm not excited in the least nope not one little bit.

Okay Laura...I want to start a garden this year. We moved into a new house last summer, so as far as I know nothing has been planted in the backyard, other than a random tomato plant we found. How do I start small? We don't have much space (at all!). What would you recommend? Since our space is limited do you ever plant in big pots? I was thinking I could set those on the deck. I definitely want more tomatoes, onions, zucchini...and maybe even a fruit plant like raspberries?

You're killing me here! I'm going through the same phase. Last night I spent about 30 minutes on Facebook looking through pic albums of last summer and the summer before. You know .. pictures that showed green and *gasp* sunshine!?

At first I was going to follow in your foot steps and dig up a big patch of our grass and research our zone and start my own garden. But then I realized - you know what?! J's mom has the biggest garden in THE WORLD (it's like the size of our ENTIRE YARD) and the shit goes to waste! It bugs me ea. year, so this year I'm doing something about it. I'm going to become a CANNER. I'm taking her tomatoes and making sauce. I'm taking her cucumbers and making pickles. I'm taking her fruits and making preserves. You got it?! hahaha And I may be emailing you for tips b/c I've never done any of the above, save for my refrigerator pickles. But I am determined to save the awesome abundance of fruits and veggies that otherwise go to waste and save us a butt load of money in the process.

This sentence made me so happy ... as do your sunny pics. I may not be itching to garden, but I'm good and damn ready for spring.

I was so jealous of your garden last year! Rick is going to build me another box on the otherside of the house to do the squash. I hope better light over there :)
