I don't think anybody guessed it, whew saved myself a buck! A few months ago POM Wonderful asked if they could send me some POM juice, they were doing some shipping research. Being the smart, savvy mom I am I said sure! I love POM Wonderful, it's a great addition to many recipes but I had one in mind that I had been kicking myself for not making when they originally sent me samples to try late last year, POM jelly.
I finally got to make that batch of POM Wonderful jelly and it was worth the wait. Union proclaimed it 2 thumbs up, Hero ate all the extra skimmed foam with the Mandarin Poppy Seed muffins from a few days ago and then some. Only little SirPrize declared it not good while rapidly eating it on a slice of fresh bread.
I only use Pomona Pectin by Workstead Industries. This is a low sugar, no sugar, honey, artificial sweetner kind of pectin. Sure Jell or Certo use a ratio of 8 cups sugar to 5 cups juice compared to Pomona Pectins which suggests using 2/3-2 cups of sugar per 4 cups of juice. You can play around with the recipes trying to find the perfect mix for you. Have you ever seen a Sure Jell or Certo package tell you to alter the sugar content to your liking or use honey? Nope in fact they tell you NOT to or your jelly will fail. Pomona Pectin always jells and you can't seem to go wrong with it, I never have anyway.
While it seems pricier at first (as better products often do) considering the obvious benefits:
- consuming less sweetener
- tasting a true flavor of fruit rather than pure sugar
- choices in amounts of sweetener
- the cost of sugar used in traditional pectin recipes
- choices in types of sweetener
POM Wonderful jelly is tangy and full of spirit! A true pioneer in jelly flavor, I've never had anything like it. I used about 1 1/4 cups of sugar to 4 cups of juice and simply followed the easy jelly directions on the Pomona Pectin directions sheet. It cooked up quick and jelled perfectly. We have been enjoying it for a few days on toast, pb&js, muffins and actually by the spoonful. If you are looking for a way to enjoy your POM Wonderful this is definitely a winner. Now I can glaze fresh salmon this summer or make a barbecue sauce right from my pantry. Or eat it with a spoon.
You can clearly see that I love POM Wonderful juice made in to jelly, they sent me 8 bottles to sample, no money changed hands. I get offers all the time to try out products, only the ones I am truly interested in make the cut of getting IN to our home and then if I WANT to include a blog post or recipe I do.
Now Pomona Pectin didn't send me a thing, it's just a product I love to use, I believe in it and I use it in all of my jelly and jam making. I think I'll try a few of other recipes I found on the website. You know, we try to grow and preserve as much of our own food as possible and they are an integral part of our lives and pantry. I just want to pass along information on the products we use in our journey to self sufficiency in this modern age. Use it how you see fit.
Peace and Love,

Thanks for sharing.
We should test out pectin the next time we make a fruit spread. We never use it, and that's why ours is much looser than the typical jelly. It's worth a try!
That looks fabulous!!! I love pomegranates and pom juice - I definitely need to make that. I bet a POM jelly and PB sandwich would be delicious.
Oh, and there clearly is a benefit to you for living way out there in Alaska! No one is ever going to contact me for "shipping research" - haha!
Hey Laura! First off, thanks for the heads up on Sure Jel, that is what my mom has used for years to make her jam. I plan on making some with her this summer...I'll see if I can get her to change to Pomona Pectin.
Secondly...I know you said you weren't offended by my "freak" comment on my blog, and I seriously hope you weren't! Sometimes my mouth can get me into trouble!!! What I should have said was...if I'm ever in a jam/on the road/away from home, and I don't have my homemade baby food with me, I will not be a drama queen and refuse to buy a jar!
And you're right...kids will be less picky if we help them along the way!
I was about to make jelly with some of the POM juice I got a couple months back, but then i totally forgot about it. Mmm...this would be great on some buttered toast.
Seee? This is just the expertise I'll need this summer!
Wow, this is awesome! They sent me a 2nd batch of 8 bottles too. I've yet to do anything w/ them.
What an awesome idea and thanks for the heads up on Pomona!

Dallas Celiac it is VERY good on PB&Js we eat those several times a week-you know the whole not going out for eating thing means we stay in-ALWAYS!!
