The Penny Worthy Project

The Penny Worthy Project is my response to tightening our belts. Gas is so expensive, food is too, everything seems to cost more theses days. How are you getting by? Do you sell on Etsy? Ebay? Thrift shop regularly? How are you getting by on less when everything costs more? Are you creating art, sewing or painting to let your soul breathe? I'd love to know! Leave a comment or a link to your blog post to join in and tell the world how you are making it.

We had a rather miraculous recovery this week, the pox healed and my husband took both boys and himself to the 3 Barons Renaissance Faire for the weekend. I was and am completely alone in my house for the first time in forever. I promptly invited friends over for a post pox get together, it was fun to sit and bs for a couple hours by ourselves.

Saturday moring brought a full day of thrifting with my mom and sister in Anchorage. I love to thrift shop with them, they have better eyes than I do and we found some great stuff. Plus they gave me some thrifted birthday presents which I, of course, loved.

My sister found the vintage Burlington Crafts tin canisters, a complete set of four, at Value Village. We never shop there but it happens to share a building with another thrift store so we hit that too. I keep a lot of things in jars in my pantry so I'm pretty sure I'll have a good use for them or I'll sell them. The Mid Century Modern ashtrays by Anton really threw my mom for a loop, she did NOT understand why I might want melmac ashtrays. It wasn't the melmac part that got her it was the ashtray part, they are collectible so they will be sold. The Fisher Price desk is exactly like one I had as a child it will be sold soon too. The nice wooden rack is actually something I have been in need of, I have to have a safe place to hng my camera our coat rack is cutting it.

I found a FireKing bowl in a pattern I've never seen before, MINE!

A couple of books I need to read.

A gorgeous old water crock for a steal.

I love this little tin covered cake plate, this is a present from my mom, the awesome.

And this is a book my sister got me.

I love the fact that I can give and receive presents that are not bought brand new. Thrifted presents don't have the pressure behind them, if you find it and it's a treasure for someone who'll love it, that is a gift in itself.

Peace and Love--

Laura

You have such a great family (mine would go into shock if I gave them a thrifted gift). I wish more people participated in thrifting!!

Glad to hear the pox is over. Sorry I have not been around much lately. Without a car or TV I have gotten further into those house and home projects I put off over winter.

Happy belated Birthday, Laura! I love your new/used gifts! I have read the Back to Basics book several times-it's a great homesteading resource.

Happy birthday!

I do a lot of regifting. I keep a "mathom box" of gifts to regift -- "mathom" is a term from Tolkien for a gift you don't want, so you pass it on to someone who does. It's a hobbit thing.

Love the finds! The cake plate...amazing! Also glad that things have gotten better at the homstead ;D

To make more money on the side I'm working harder at monetizing my site and doing a little reselling. I'm working on an art line that I'll sell originals and prints from too, so much to do, so little time!

Good luck with your money-saving efforts, too!

It's a beautiful thing that your family appreciates thrifted gifts and goods. There is usually something about them that reminds you of the essence of that person.
I also love how you referenced that making things is a way to let your soul breathe. I feel that way about making/ restoring/ and blogging. It truly is wonderful.
BTW, the cake plate is amazing, kudos to the mommy.

I really dig the cake plate and cover, too! And thanks to Serene for reintroducing the idea of a mathom box...I didn't remember the term :)
